Comparison of traps and attractants for Drosophila suzukii monitoring in North-East Italy

A prompt and wide-area monitoring of D. suzukii is the pre-requisite to set up a rational and effective control strategy.

Different types of traps and lures based on food attractants have been developed; the aim of these surveys carried out in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 in Modena, Trento and Verona districts was to test the activity of different combinations commercially available.

The red trap Drosotrap (Biobest®, modified adding a 3x3 mm net on the holes) showed the best results as adults captures and selectivity. Regarding the lures, the highest attractiveness was obtained with Droskidrink, Suzukii Trap and Gasser. SuzukiiTrap and Pherocon SWD were the most selective baits. Concerning the lure management, Droskidrink presented bacterial-gel formation with summer hot temperature, while Suzukii Trap and Pherocon SWD resulted easier to manage.

Moreover, Drosotrap baited with Droskidrink resulted effective also in monitoring of the parasitoids species.

Comparing all the trials, Drosotrap® (Biobest®) baited with Droskidrink, Suzukii Trap or Gasser is the best solutions for monitoring D. suzukii.
