Use of toxic baits for the control of Drosophila suzukii

A toxic bait is “a food containing a poison”. The food improves the uptake of the poison by the insect, in order to improve the efficacy of the insecticide. As adult D. suzukii actively search sugars and proteins on the plants’ surface, the species is a candidate for control with baits. But in field experiments, the use of baits against SWD has given variable results so far. In extensive studies in cages in laboratory and field the authors could show the potential of baits for the control of baits. The efficacy of strongly reduced doses of insecticides combined with a bait was better than the same compounds sprayed alone in a full dose.

There are serious obstacles for the use of baits in open-air cultivation though. Experiments showed that some commercial baits used so far (i.e. Combiprotec, Dedetec company, Germany) are easily washed of by rain. And the main active ingredient used so far in combination with these baits, spinosad, suffers from rapid degradation by UV light. Improved rain fastness and the use of compounds that are less prone to degradation are needed to get a good efficacy in open-air cultivation. In crops protected by rain covers or otherwise, the present baits may be a welcome addition to the limited toolbox that is available for control of SWD.
